I have had my fair share of such moments and here I am sharing with you the top 7 essential parenting tips for new mothers. This tips have worked wonders for me and I hope they can help you too in your journey of motherhood.

  1. Rest  - The most important and non negotiable being a new mother is rest. Take as much rest as you can. They say sleep when the baby sleeps but you do what works best for you. In the newborn phase babies spend almost all of their time sleeping. Make use of this opportunity and take plenty of rest.

  2. Self-Care - The most underrated part in most of the new mothers life is self care. We hardly have the energy to take care of our selves. We don't realize it but this negligence makes us feeling and looking more worn out than we actually are. Take 10 minutes out for yourself everyday. Dress well, make your hair, do your basic skin care that's it. Even such simple things have a drastic effect in our physical and emotional well being.

  3. Eat well - Even if you are not breast feeding you should eat well. Take regular and balanced meals. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Have plenty of fluids. Avoid sugary drinks at all costs. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

  4. Ask for help - Sometimes social media can make motherhood feel like a cake walk. We see other new moms on the internet with flawless makeup and clean homes. But in real world things look different. Don't be afraid to ask for help. You can not pour from an empty cup and to refill your own don't hesitate to ask for help.

  5. Internet does not have all the answers  - We have become so used to the internet that more often than not we turn towards it for almost everything. From looking out for certain restaurant recommendations to sometimes diagnosing our symptoms. The internet is a powerful learning tool but remember it is not a medical professional. Always reach out to your (or your child's) doctor for any medical advice.

  6. Postpartum blues or baby blues - Approximately 80% of mothers experience baby blues. You might feel a sudden wave of anxiety or depression. Crying on and off for no particular reason, the feeling of not being able to do enough for the baby etc. Baby blues usually last for a couple of weeks after delivery. Bringing a new life in this world is one of the most incredible things we as mothers do. Our body goes through a massive shift physically and so does our hormonal and emotional balance. Confide in your partner or loved ones and treat yourself with kindness. I have dealt with postpartum depression for over an year and trust me when I say this, if your symptoms last for more than two weeks or are more severe, reach out to your doctor immediately.

  7. Go out - Take ample of rest but do not confide your self inside your home. Go out for a short walk and get some fresh air. Even a 10 minutes stroll outside is fine. Walking helps clear our head and with everything else that you are going through both physically and emotionally, a short walk can work wonders.

We are not here to be super moms but rather be the ones who are healthy and happy. Focus on healing first both physically and emotionally. Take baby steps towards recovery and be kind to yourself. Happy parenting!
